Context and commentary on verse 75
The whole verse is an offer of a horse to a rider, and every epithet in it is a word from the horse trade. Kalyanin is of good breed, sarasachitragati is one with several pleasing gaits, savega is swift, sarvengitajna answers the least hint of its rider, anagha is free of defect, and dhruvalakshanadhya is furnished with the settled marks that judges of horses look for. The devotee stands his own mind before Shiva like a horse and asks him to mount it.
The vocative ‘vrishabhadhirudha’ comes only at the end of the verse, and its placing is the wit of it. Shiva already has a mount, and it is a slow-walking bull. So the inner sense of the request is, leave the bull for once and mount this horse. ‘Netah’ deserves notice too. Netri is a leader and also one who drives a vehicle, and within the horse picture the vocative is calling to the rider.
Seeing the mind as a horse is not new. In the third section of the Katha Upanishad the body is the chariot, the intellect the charioteer, the mind the reins and the senses the horses. This verse alters that arrangement a little. Here the mind itself is the horse, and the one asked to hold the reins is not our intellect but Shiva. In the earlier verses of this hymn the mind appeared as a monkey and as a wandering creature. Here, for once, it is praised rather than scolded.
‘Sarvengitajna’ is the finest word in the list. A good horse needs no whip and turns at the smallest movement of the hand, and in the same way a mind that knows the hint of its master’s wish needs no command. To call one’s own mind ‘anagha’, without blemish, is a large claim, though. Many therefore read these as qualities the mind will take on once Shiva has mounted it, rather than ones it already has.
The last verb is ‘chara’, move, ride about. The verse does not ask that the horse be tethered but that it be mounted and ridden. For those who take the stilling of the mind to be the whole aim, this is a prayer of another kind: let the mind run, but let the one seated on it be someone else. The metre is not the short one of the previous verse. There are fourteen syllables to a quarter, in the arrangement of vasantatilaka.

When a water tanker comes down the street in summer, everyone stands with pots and buckets. The man up on it does not tilt the whole tank. With a small turn of the wrist he moves the mouth of the hose to the next pot, and the flow follows it.
Our own mind too is hard to turn by force. Once we know which hint it answers, a small turn is enough. The flow need not be stopped. Only the direction is in our hands.
