In this sapless round of worldly life, remote from the worship of you, I wander blind and dull of wit, and it is fitting that you should protect me out of your highest compassion. O Pashupati, who is more helpless than I? And who other than you, so skilled in guarding the wretched, is a refuge for me in the three worlds?

Context and commentary on verse 13

There is no pun in this verse and no story. It is a plain appeal. The word-work, though, is tight. Asare, samsare and dure all close on the same sound. The pair madanyah, other than I, and tvadanyah, other than you, sets the verse’s two questions face to face. No one is more helpless than I, and no one is a refuge but you, so the two questions have a single answer.

Two places allow more than one construction. Taken as an epithet of samsara, ‘nijabhajanadure’ means the worldly round that lies far from worship of you. Taken with the wanderer, it means one who has himself drifted far from that worship. In the same way many read ‘tava’ with ‘dinah’, giving the sense who among your creatures is more helpless than I. We have given the first readings as the main ones.

In the earlier verses the word jada was used of other people. The ‘jadajana’ of the eighth verse and the ‘jadamati’ of the ninth referred to those who wander in search of flowers. Here the poet turns the same word upon himself: ‘jadadhiya bhramantam mam’. Andha, blind, is a figure here for not seeing the road. Making oneself small in a verse of petition is the way of the stotra tradition.

The word ‘uchitam’ is worth noticing. The poet does not say please protect me. He says that protecting him is fitting. What begins as a petition thus takes the shape of an argument. The next verse carries that argument on to the ground of kinship, and the fifteenth, bolder still, takes up Brahma’s writing itself. The metre is shikharini.

For life today

At a night train window the lights of stations whose names we do not know slide past one by one. Not knowing where we now are, we sit awake.

Asking for help is not a defeat. When the insistence that we must manage everything ourselves loosens a little, the mere memory that there is someone to ask brings some ease.
