O Lord, O Vibhu, even though you are pleased with me, whether from the fruit of my merits or out of your compassion, how shall I see the pair of your spotless lotus feet? The row of gods, relishing the flurry of their bowing, hides those feet from me with their own crowns of gold and ruby.

Context and commentary on verse 17

The picture is itself the beauty of the verse. The gods crowd forward to bow before Shiva, and the gold and ruby crowns on their lowered heads stand like a glittering wall. The poor devotee at the back gets no sight of the feet at all. There is a gentle joke here: even after grace has been granted, one obstacle remains.

The words repay attention. ‘Nilimpa’ is an uncommon word for the gods and turns up here and there in hymn literature. ‘Sambhrama’ means bustle or haste, and also awe. The root ‘jush’ means to relish or take pleasure in. So ‘namassambhramajusham’ describes those who enjoy the very bustle of bowing. ‘Makuta’ is another form of the word for a crown.

The first quarter names two causes, the fruit of merits and compassion, and the poet lets both stand with an ‘either from this or from that’. The weight of the whole hymn falls on compassion, since nowhere does the poet press the account of his own merit. ‘Tvayi prasanne api’ is a locative construction meaning even though you are pleased.

In ‘mam sthagayati’ the object is ‘mam’, me, so literally the row of gods covers the poet over, that is, shuts him out of the sight. Several readers take it as the crowns hiding the feet, and the sense is not different. This same crowd of gods returns in the next verse under the name ‘harimukhah’. The metre is shikharini.

For life today

Sitting on a back bench in a classroom, it is hard to see the board at all. The heads in front come in the way. The lesson is going on and we are there, but we cannot see.

Then it is our choice whether to get up and change places, or to be content with listening. Sometimes what delays our sight of a thing is nobody’s hostility, only the eagerness of those standing in front.
