When shall I see you, seated upon the hump of the great bull that lows softly in its exuberance, amid the hymns of Brahma and the others, the cries of victory from those who keep vows, and the play of the ganas? When will the day come on which I see you blue throated, three eyed, your body embraced by Uma, holding a deer in one hand and the khandaparashu in the other?

Context and commentary on verse 25

This verse too moves on the longing word kada. The whole of it is a single scene. Sound comes first: the hymns of Brahma and the others, the cries of victory from those who keep vows, the noise of the ganas at play. Then the bull comes into view, and after it the form of Shiva seated upon it. This ordering, which draws steadily nearer, brings the picture of the darshana to life.

The word madakala repays attention. Mada is exuberance or the rush of joy, and kala is a soft indistinct sound, so madakala mahoksha is a great bull lowing softly in its excitement. Kakud is the hump on the bull’s back. Nandi, Shiva’s mount, is identified here by description rather than by name. With its sound and its movement the bull gives the picture a warm naturalness.

The details of the form are the familiar ones of the Shaiva tradition. Nilagriva is he who held in his throat the poison that rose at the churning of the ocean. Trinayana is the three eyed one, and tradition explains the three as the sun, the moon and fire. Umashlishtavapusha means one whose body is embraced by Uma. Karadhritamriga means holding a deer in the hand, and many sculptures show the deer and the axe in Shiva’s two upper hands. Many read that deer as a sign of the restless mind. Earlier in this poem the mind appeared as a monkey and as a thief. Here the same restlessness seems to sit quietly in Shiva’s hand.

Two notes on the wording. In the third line trinayanam and umashlishtavapusham are joined by sandhi into trinayanamumashlishtavapusham. Sthitam, nilagrivam, trinayanam, karadhritamrigam and khandaparashum are all epithets agreeing with the single word tvam. More than one sense is current for the closing word khandaparashu. One is he who holds the axe that cuts to pieces. Another is he who holds an axe with a part broken off. Many say the word is also used as a name of Shiva in its own right. That what is gentle as a deer and what is hard as an axe meet in one figure is the last thing worth noticing in the verse. The metre is shikharini, seventeen syllables to a quarter.

For life today

For those who work in a distant town, the last hour of the once a year train ride home moves very slowly. Though we sit counting the fields outside the window, only one thing stays in the mind, the face that will be waiting at the door.

Longing to see someone needs details. Which door, which hour, which voice: it is by such details that waiting stays alive. Here too Shankara sets argument aside and holds on to a picture.
