Grant me the compassionate glance of your eyes, long prayed for by the gods themselves. O Shambhu, teacher of the worlds, give my mind the teaching of happiness.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 29ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 29
This verse has no images and no puns. Line after line brings only plain verbs: I worship, I think, I go for refuge, I ask. These are, in order, the work of the body, the work of the mind, the surrender of the will and the work of speech. In one breath the verse hands over to Shiva all three instruments, body, speech and mind. Coming between verses thick with ornament, this direct prayer sounds like a pause for breath.
What is asked for matters. Not an object, but a look. ‘Vikshaam chakshushim sakarunaam’ means a glance full of compassion, falling from his very eyes. The idea of the deity’s sidelong look of grace runs through devotional literature, and in the case of three-eyed Shiva it carries added weight. ‘Divyaishchiram prarthitam’ means that the gods themselves have long been waiting for this glance. Since even the gods are still waiting, the devotee knows how large a thing he is asking for.
Two small words are read in two ways. ‘Paramam’ may be attached to Shiva, you who are supreme, or to the verb, I think of you exceedingly. ‘Divyaih’ is most often read as by the gods, though some read it as by the divine sages. Besides this, some in the tradition take the word ‘chakshushi’ as pointing to initiation given by the teacher’s look alone.
In the last line Shiva is addressed as teacher of the worlds, and what is asked of a teacher is asked of him: instruction. But the pupil is not the devotee himself, it is ‘madiyamanasah’, my mind. This turn, that it is the mind which must learn, is a fine one. The mind given away in verse 27 with ‘let my mind be yours’ is here seated before the teacher to be taught its lesson. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
For someone who has left home and lives alone in a rented room, the last part of the day grows heavy. What is wanted then is neither a solution nor advice. It seems enough if someone looks at us kindly for a moment.
Not everything we ask for takes the shape of an object. Attention, kindness, a good look from someone: these are requests too. Remembering that others may be asking as much from us, we see that even our small words carry weight.
ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಬೇರೆ ಪಾಠಾಂತರವೋ ಕಂಡಿತೇ? ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ.
