O conqueror of death, for release from the calamities that come of sin and for fair prosperity, my tongue, mind, head, feet, hands, eyes and ears keep pressing me. Praise, meditation, bowing, circumambulation, worship, beholding and hearing: to these they ask me to be set. So command me, appoint that very work for me, command me again and again, and do not leave me without words.
Context and commentary on verse 41
The verse stands on two long compounds. The first is a list of seven acts: praise, meditation, bowing, circumambulation, worship, beholding, hearing. The second is a list of seven parts of the body: tongue, mind, head, feet, hands, eyes, ears. Both lists run in the same order, so that praise belongs to the tongue, meditation to the mind, bowing to the head, circumambulation to the feet, worship to the hands, beholding to the eyes and hearing to the ears. Sanskrit poetics has a name for this ordered matching, yathasankhya, also called krama.
The turn of the verse lies in the words ‘aham prarthito’, I have been entreated. The one asking is not the devotee but his own limbs. They have already chosen their work and are waiting for their master’s consent, and all he does is carry their request to Shiva. Besides this, what he asks for is not grace but an order. The Shaiva habit of seeing devotion as service is plain here: what a servant wants is not a reward but the instruction to begin.
The little word ‘muhuh’, again and again, matters. It grants that one command will not do, and that a mind which forgets must be told repeatedly. The seven acts named here are outward observances, within anyone’s reach. Many readers recall in this connection the Bhagavata’s list of nine kinds of devotion, hearing, singing and the rest. The list here is not that one, though it stands close to it.
Shiva is addressed here as Mrityunjaya, conqueror of death. The verse states its two aims at the very start: release from the calamity that follows wrongdoing, and a fair prosperity. One takes something away, the other gives. The name Mrityunjaya has long been tied in tradition to prayers said for long life. What this verse asks for, though, is no remedy for any illness, but permission to get to work.
The closing words ‘ma me ‘vachah’ are read in two ways. One, let there be no speechlessness for me, let the praise not stop. Two, do not be silent towards me, do not withhold your command. ‘Ma’ is a word of prohibition, and the reader must supply the verb that goes with it. In the previous verse the intellect was the water lift, speech the pot and poetry the channel, and the crop of devotion was watered. Here the parts of the body come forward, and in the next verse the mind becomes a fort. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter, with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today
At closing time the hands of a shopkeeper do their work by themselves. Pulling the door to, turning the lock, putting out the light: nobody needs to be reminded. What has been done all day has settled into the limbs as habit.
Whatever we do repeatedly is what our hands, eyes and ears will later ask for on their own. So it is enough to notice now and then what habit we are giving them. Not much force is needed after that.
