ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
In the garden of the heart, where the spring that is meditation on Shambhu keeps company, the withered old leaves that are sin have dropped away. The clustering sprays of the creeper of devotion, holding to the fresh shoots that are merit, shine out, and the buds that are the virtues glow. The flowers there are the words of japa, their fragrance is a good disposition, the wave of honey is the nectar of the bliss of knowledge, and the fruit that grows full there is awareness.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 47ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 47
The whole verse unfolds a single picture: a garden in spring. Meditation on Shambhu is the spring, the heart is the garden. Then every part of the garden is matched with something inward. The dry leaf is sin, the shoot is merit, the creeper is devotion, the bud is virtue, the flower is the word of japa, the fragrance is a good disposition, the honey is the bliss of knowledge, the fruit is awareness. The order of the picture is also the order of practice.
The first thing spring does is not to open flowers but to shed the old leaves. The verse follows that natural order, and so sin drops away first. Besides, something here is worth noticing. Shedding leaves and putting out shoots are not the gardener’s labour but the season’s work. Since meditation is called the spring, many take the verse to suggest that instead of cultivating virtue after virtue by effort, one brings a climate inside and the rest follows of itself.
Several words in the verse carry two senses. ‘Vasana’ is the scent of a flower, and also the old leaning that stays in the mind, one’s inward bent. Sadvasana is therefore both a good fragrance and a good disposition. ‘Pravala’ is a young shoot and also coral, so the red of the new shoot looks like coral. ‘Samvit’ is awareness, the word Vedanta uses for consciousness. And ‘lahari’ recalls the name of the hymn itself: the wave of Shiva’s bliss appears here as a wave of honey.
There is a point of grammar here. The only finite verb in the whole verse is ‘dipyante’, they glow. Everything else is nouns and qualifiers, and it is nouns set one upon another that build the garden. ‘Sangini’ and ‘hridarame’ stand in the locative and go together, so ‘in that garden which spring keeps company with’ is the ground on which the whole verse rests.
In this stretch the poet says one thing again and again in different pictures: a nest in verse 45, a mansion in 46, a garden here, and a lake and a creeper in what follows. The bhaktilata of this verse reappears as bhaktilatika in verse 49, so these verses are best read together. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
Anyone who pours a mug of water on the plant in a balcony pot each day knows that the change shows only after weeks. One day’s work is an old leaf falling, another day’s is a new shoot.
Change inside us goes on in the same stepwise way. Rather than making a bargain with the mind to set everything right in a single day, it helps more to do one small thing every day without a break.
ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಬೇರೆ ಪಾಠಾಂತರವೋ ಕಂಡಿತೇ? ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ.
