O mind, crest ornament among all swans, go steadily to the lake that is meditation on Shambhu. It is the abode of the water of eternal bliss, the resort of the lotuses that are the hearts of gods and sages, clear, served by good birds, a remover of impurity, a bringer out of good disposition. Why will you wander about small puddles and get nothing but weariness?

Context and commentary on verse 48

The royal swan of verse 46 returns here, and now it is shown a lake. The parts of the picture are these. The lake is meditation on Shambhu, its water is the savour of eternal bliss, the lotuses open in it are the inner selves of gods and sages, the birds that come to it are those already settled in that meditation, and the small pools around it are the little matters the mind runs after. The last line is not an order but a question.

Nearly every word of the verse states the pool and the meditation at once. ‘Rasa’ is water and also savour. ‘Svaccha’ is clear water and also a clean mind. ‘Kalusha’ is the muddiness of water and also the stain of the mind. ‘Vasana’ is fragrance and also inward leaning. ‘Dvija’ is a bird, and also one twice born, that is, one who has been invested with the sacred thread. With this one word both the birds at the water and the good men settled in meditation come into view together.

‘Palvala’ is a small pool that fills in the rains and dries up in summer. A swan cannot live in one all the year, so it must keep moving from pool to pool. The weariness the verse speaks of comes not from flying far but from being unable to stay anywhere. ‘Sthiram’ can be taken two ways: adverbially, go steadily, or with the lake itself, to that steady lake which does not dry.

The way the mind is addressed deserves notice. In earlier verses of the Shivananda Lahari the mind came as a monkey, as a creature wandering in a forest. Here it is called the crest ornament among swans. This is a teacher’s way of setting a task before a clever pupil by recalling his dignity rather than scolding him. Some also recall the old belief that a swan separates milk from water, which suggests that the power to choose lies with the mind itself.

There is an elegance in the make of the verse. Six qualifiers of the lake come one after another in the first two lines, and only in the third does it become clear what is being described. That same line carries both the command and the address. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today

On market day a trader who carries the same load to four villages and back finds by evening that the load has gone down but his legs have given way. Someone who set up a stall in one place all day does not have that tiredness.

The same arithmetic holds for our attention. Even when the day’s work has been little, if the mind has gone to many places and come back, the tiredness at night is greater. Once we settle where we mean to be, a part of the effort falls away of itself.
