Context and commentary on verse 53
The hinge of this verse is its last word. In Sanskrit nilakantha is Shiva, who held the poison in his throat, and it is also the peacock with its blue neck. Standing on that one name, the poet reads Shiva’s familiar features through the whole verse as the features of a peacock. In the previous verse the devotees were the peacocks, and here Shiva himself is the peacock.
The features can be taken one by one. A peacock has a crest on its head, and for Shiva the sky itself is that crest, since what is above his head is the sky. A peacock’s tail carries spots that look like eyes, and those spots are the eyes of all the serpents Shiva wears. The peacock’s cry is keka, which is why it is called keki, the crier. On Shiva’s side that cry is the teaching of the pranava, the instruction of Om, and it becomes grace for those who stand bowed before him.
The third line gives the reason for the dance, and here all three qualifiers serve on both sides. Shyama is she who is dark, shailasamudbhava is she who arose from the mountain, and ghanaruchi is she whose sheen is that of a cloud. On one side these name Girija, Parvati the daughter of the mountain, at the sight of whom Shiva dances in joy. On the other the same words name the dark, gleaming cloud that has risen over the hill, at the sight of which a peacock dances. Both stand together in one line.
The phrase ‘vedantopavane vihararasikam’ in the last line completes the picture. A peacock roams in a grove, and Shiva in the grove of the Upanishads. This is not only ornament, for it also states that he is the reality at which Vedanta arrives. One point of grammar is worth noticing. ‘Akashena’, ‘netra’ and ‘ninadaih’ all stand in the instrumental, so they give the ground on which he is called crested, plumed and crier. Many take ‘netra’ as the instrumental of netra, the eye, while others read it as the instrumental of netri, the leader, that is, because he is the lord of all serpents.
This verse and the next form a pair, and both end in the same line, ‘tam nilakantham bhaje’. This one describes the peacock’s form, and the next describes the setting of that peacock’s dance. Such paired verses appear here and there in the Shivananda Lahari. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today
In summer the school ground is nothing but dust. On the day the first rain falls, the same ground has another smell and another colour. On that day it is hard to keep the children sitting indoors.
What changed is not the ground but one thing that fell on it. The same happens to us when we see something very familiar in another light. This verse, which reads Shiva’s same form as a peacock, is doing exactly that work.
