A single sun splits the mass of darkness that has spread over earth and sky, and himself becomes visible to the eye. You, whose light is that of a crore of suns, why do you not come within knowing? Then how thick, alas, must my own darkness be. O Pashupati, take all of it away and be gracious to me directly.
Context and commentary on verse 58
The verse is built like a small argument. One sun splits the darkness that covers earth and sky, and in doing so becomes visible itself. Your light is that of a crore of suns, and yet you are not seen. The fault, then, is not in the light but in the eye. The poet lays that lack on himself rather than on Shiva, which carries on the admission of the verse before.
Calling the sun varijabandhava is not idle. Poets call the sun the kinsman of the lotus because the day lotus opens when he rises, so here the sun is not the one who scorches but the one who makes things open. There is a play in tamomandala as well, since mandala is a disc or a mass, and the sun’s own orb is called a mandala. One disc splits another.
Kotisuryaprabha is a description that occurs often in the scriptures, and one may recall here that the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita compares the light of the universal form to that of a thousand suns. There is also a paradox in it. What the eye needs is a measured light, and too much light dazzles it. So the verse can be read as saying that failing to see owes as much to the scale of the light as to the darkness.
The word tamas works in two senses, the darkness the eye sees and ignorance. The sun removes the first, and the wish here is that only Shiva’s grace removes the second. In sakshat prasanno bhava the word sakshat matters: what is known by inference will not do, it must be before the eyes. What verse 56 said of the sages, that he stands plainly before their minds, is here asked for the poet himself. Nineteen syllables to a quarter, the metre being shardulavikridita.

On the night of a village fair the lamps along the row of stalls glare into the eyes. A familiar face standing just at the edge of that circle of light goes unseen.
Sometimes the light is not enough, and more often the eye has been dazzled. When it seems that nothing can be seen, it is worth looking at where our own gaze has settled before blaming the light around us.
