She is a cow who yields again and again the nectar that is gladness beyond measure. She dwells in the spotless cowpen that is your feet, and she is great merit come to ripeness. Compassionate Pashupati, protect well that one cow of devotion, the only one I have.

Context and commentary on verse 68

The whole verse runs on a single picture, the one cow of a poor household. The parts of it are plain. The cow is devotion, the milk she yields is gladness beyond measure, and the pen she stands in is Shiva’s feet. The word ‘muhuh’ matters. A cow’s milk is not a treasure found once but a daily giving, and the fruit of devotion is like that, not a single moment of vision but a gladness that comes again and again.

Calling Shiva ‘pashupate’ here is not a mere form of address. When the protection of a cow is asked for, it fits to ask the lord of animals, and the word ‘sadaya’ recalls the compassion of that lordship. Verse 66 called people the animals of his sport and argued from that to his duty of guarding them. Here the same thing returns as a gentler picture, with no argument, only a handing over.

The catch in the poet’s voice is hidden in the word ‘ekam’. I have only one cow, and if she is lost there is nothing else. The attachment of a man who keeps a single cow is of a different kind. Besides, many read ‘eka’ as undivided devotion, a loyalty not shared out elsewhere. The two senses do not contradict each other.

‘Supunyapakam’ states something fine. Paka is ripening, cooking, coming to maturity. The verse therefore holds devotion to be not the beginning of practice but what is had after long merit has slowly ripened. What is gained that way should not be lost lightly, and hence the request for protection. Many read the danger to the cow as thieves and wild animals, and the danger to devotion as unsteadiness and doubt.

The word ‘dhenu’ also brings to mind Kamadhenu, the cow that gives whatever is asked, but the verse does not name her, so that should be taken only as an association. The previous verse took refuge in the contemplation of Sadashiva, and this one asks for a guard over the devotion born of that refuge, so the two verses hang on one thread. The metre is the same as the previous verse, pushpitagra, with twelve syllables in the odd quarters and thirteen in the even.

For life today

In a house that keeps a single cow, the first work of the day is cleaning the shed. Before going to bed someone touches the latch of the door to check it. The milk comes in the morning, but the work belongs to the night before.

Our good habits are also just one or two. We count what they give us and forget the place and the guarding they need. If the shed is not cleaned the cow does not stay.
