O husband of Arya, for your sake Hari became an arrow, became a bull, became the wife as half your body, became a boar, became a friend, became the bearer of the drum, and took on such forms as these. Besides that, he offered his own eye at your foot. That Hari, who is himself a part of your body, is more worshipful than the worshipful. And if not he, who else is greater than he?

Context and commentary on verse 82

The first two quarters are a list drawn from the puranas. When Tripura was burnt it was Vishnu who became the arrow set to Shiva’s bow, it was he who took the form of the bull that carries Shiva, he who stood as the wife in half the body, he who was the boar that dug into the earth, he who was the friend at Shiva’s side, and he who beat the drum for Shiva’s dance. These stories occur in different puranas in different shapes, so it would be wrong to trace them to one source.

‘Nayanarpana’ in the third quarter recalls a well known story. When a thousand lotuses were being counted out for Shiva’s worship one fell short, and Vishnu then plucked out one of his own eyes and offered it, receiving the discus for it, so tradition says. The previous verse spoke of offering the mind, this one of offering an eye, and the eighty-fourth will speak of giving away the intellect. Offering is one of the threads running through these verses.

There is a fine point in the wording. Banatva, vrishabhatva, bharyatva and ghonitva all carry the suffix ‘tva’, and sakhita and vahata carry ‘ta’. Both make abstract nouns of state, ‘the being of such a thing’. The suggestion is therefore not that Vishnu put on a disguise but that he took that state upon himself. It is worth noticing too that being a bull, being an arrow, carrying a drum, none of these is a lofty station.

The shape of the argument in the last quarter deserves attention. ‘Pujyat pujyatarah’ is the comparative suffix taking the ablative, more worshipful than those counted worshipful. Then comes the question, ‘na chet ko va tadanyodhikah’. Closing with a question that needs no answer is a usage of the Sanskrit hymns. This cannot be read as disparaging Vishnu, for it is praise of Hari. The words ‘tvaddehabhagah’, a part of your body, come close to the position that Hari and Hara are one, a position seen in other hymns of Shankara as well.

The vocative ‘aryapate’ calls Parvati Arya and names Shiva as her husband. The ‘umamahesha’ of the previous verse and the ‘samba’ of the next address Shiva in the same way, together with his consort. In the text ‘kritavan’ and ‘tvaddehabhagah’ are joined by sandhi as kritavamstvaddehabhago. Counting the metre, each quarter has nineteen syllables, shardulavikridita as in the previous verse.

For life today

The organ donor card kept in a wallet is a small slip of paper. At the moment of signing it, the one who signs does not know what will go to whom, or when. The decision only comes into effect if the family has been told of it beforehand, since in most places the final word rests with them.

What looks large in giving is not the thing given but the giving that keeps no account of return. When we give what we have, some time, a unit of blood, a kind word, without knowing who receives it, it may be of help to someone else’s life.
