I am not skilled at churning the ocean, nor am I one who breaks through to the nether world. Nor am I a practised hunter in the forest chase. O you who wear the moon on your crown, tell me then how I am to arrange your worship, with its food, flowers, ornaments, clothes and the rest.
Context and commentary on verse 85
Three denials and then a question: that is the frame of the verse. Many match the three occupations named to the materials that worship needs. The churning of the ocean brought up the nectar, so it stands on the side of food. Breaking into the nether world yields gems, so it stands for ornaments, and the forest gives flowers and the skins of animals, so it stands for flowers and clothes. The verse does not state this matching outright, so it can only be offered as a reading that is widely accepted.
None of the three is a small undertaking. The whole company of gods and demons churned the ocean, the great strong ones of the puranas pierced the nether world, and a forest hunt takes a trained hand. So the devotee measures himself against the scale of myth and comes up short. Confessing inability is a common device of the hymns, and it has come more than once in the Shivananda Lahari.
The word ‘lubdhah’ has two senses. Lubdhaka means a hunter, and lubdha means greedy. So besides the main sense, that he is no practised hunter in the forest chase, some hear the further note that he is not even covetous of such things. The second sense suits the tone of the verse, for what is being confessed is not a poverty of goods but the want of the knack for procuring them.
The word ‘kathaya’ is the heart of the verse. The devotee asks how the worship is to be done, and he asks the very one who is to receive it. ‘Kalpayani’ is a first person form, how am I to arrange. So the verse is not a request for goods but a request for instruction. It gives no answer, yet the giving of the intellect in the eighty-fourth and the mind offered in the eighty-first have already shown the direction of one.
There is a small beauty in the closing address. Tradition says that the moon too came up when the ocean was churned, and Shiva is the one who wears that moon on his crown. The man who cannot churn the ocean is speaking to one who already carries the fruit of that churning on his head. What the asker lacks, then, the listener does not need. Counting the metre, each quarter has fifteen syllables with the first six short, malini as in the eighty-third and eighty-fourth.

For life today
On some days the tins in the kitchen are nearly empty. A meal is put together from the few things that are there. Setting it before a visitor, the household feels awkward, and the one who eats it does not find it short.
Out of the awkwardness of having little to give, we put off giving at all, telling ourselves it can be done when a better day comes. To set out what there is and say plainly what there is not is the simpler way.
