O Shambhu, your food is poison, your ornament a hooded serpent, your garment a hide, your vehicle a great bull. What will you give me, and what is there with you to give at all? Give me only devotion to your lotus feet.

Context and commentary on verse 87

The first half of the verse is an inventory of Shiva’s property, and it contains no verb at all. Four pairs of words stand in a row: food, poison, ornament, serpent, garment, hide, vehicle, bull. The poison that rose when the ocean was churned and which Shiva drank and held in his throat, the serpent coiled at his neck, the hide tied at his waist, the bull that walks beside him, these are familiar pictures of the Shaiva stories. The four things the world runs away from are here the Lord’s own belongings.

The words what will you give me, and what is there at all, sound at first like a taunt, yet this is the speech of affectionate familiarity. Many say that this manner, praising a god under the appearance of blame, is a familiar one in hymns. Vishnu has Shri, Indra has the white elephant, and Shiva has only what everyone else has given up. The question of what one could ask of him is therefore a natural one.

The answer lies in the last quarter. Give me devotion at your feet is not a gift that has to be fetched from anywhere else. In ‘bhaktimeva’ the small word ‘eva’ cuts everything away and leaves one thing, not liberation and not wealth but devotion. What is left with one who has renounced everything is himself, so what he can give is himself as well.

Some details of the words: ‘garala’ is poison, ‘phani’ is the hooded one, that is, a serpent, ‘kalapa’ is a gathered array and also an ornament, and ‘mahoksha’ is a full grown great bull. ‘Dasyasi’ is a future form, you will give. One caution should be added. The picture of poison held in the throat is a symbol of bearing hardship oneself for the good of others, and it is not something to be imitated.

The metre changes here. The first and third quarters have eleven syllables and the second and fourth have twelve. The odd quarters match each other and the even quarters match each other, so this is one of the shorter metres in which the halves correspond, and we cannot name it with certainty. The same counts return in verses eighty-nine and ninety.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

We often see that it is those who have little in hand who give. When the change falls short at a shop counter, the person standing behind holds out a coin, before being asked.

The power to give does not come from the size of what one has. It comes from a mind ready to give. If we sit waiting on the ground that we have too little, the moment for giving passes by.
