O Lord, you are not pleased by bows, nor by praises, nor by the rites of worship, nor by meditation and samadhi. Is it by a bow, by a pestle, or by mere stones that pleasure arises in you? Say what gives you pleasure, and I shall do just that.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 89ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 89
The shape of the verse deserves notice. In the first half four instrumental plurals are set out in a row and dismissed with one phrase, na tushtah, you are not pleased. In the second half three quite different instruments are offered, and he asks which of them it is. At the end come the imperative ‘vada’, say, and the words ‘tatha karomi’, and I shall do just that.
Many read the three hints, a bow, a pestle and stones, as recalling stories of Shiva’s devotees. The bow is joined to the story of the hunter devotee and also to Arjuna, who fought Shiva bow in hand. The story of a devotee who worshipped by throwing stones belongs to the Tamil Shaiva tradition. Which story the pestle points to we cannot say with certainty. Taken together, the three are pictures of people with no training in the codes, who worshipped with whatever came to hand.
The words ‘na tushtah’ are blunt and must be read with care. The verse is not disparaging bows, praise, worship or meditation. A poet who has been praising for eighty-eight verses can hardly be dismissing praise. What he is saying is that Shiva’s favour is not a commodity that can be reckoned by procedure. Nor is there any suggestion here that one should throw stones. What matters is the mind of the one who threw them.
The voice heard in this verse is a familiar one in hymns, the voice that praises in the guise of blame. In the words tell me what suits you and I shall do just that, insistence and affection stand together. ‘Pritikaram’ means what causes pleasure, and ‘karomi’, though a present form, stands here as a promise of what is to be done. The small word ‘va’, or, leaves the choice in Shiva’s own hands.
The previous verse asked about fitness, this one asks about what pleases, and in the next the poet offers what he actually has in hand. This is the place where question turns into offering. The metre is the same as in verse eighty-seven: eleven syllables in the odd quarters and twelve in the even, one of the shorter metres in which the halves correspond. We cannot name it with certainty.

A teacher of music does not hand a beginner a great composition. The word is to hold one note steady, and if that much is done the teacher is pleased.
When we set out to help someone we need the same kind of clarity. Rather than sitting still with the thought of doing something large, it works better to ask what is needed now and to do that much.
