Context and commentary on verse 90

The spine of the verse is three instrumental forms, vachasa, manasa and shirasa. Speech tells the deeds, the mind serves the form, and the head bows. The old reckoning speaks of three instruments, body, speech and mind. Here the head stands for the body’s share, because the smallest thing a body can do is bend.

The pivot of the verse is the phrase ‘udyogavidhasu aprasaktah’. Udyoga is a large task taken in hand, and vidha is its arrangement. Building a temple, conducting a great sacrifice, setting out for distant shrines, all these call for money, people and leisure. The poet says plainly that he has none of them, and sets out instead the three things he does have.

‘Aprasaktah’ is a nominative form, so we have taken it as agreeing with ‘aham’, I. We have read ‘te’, your, with ‘udyogavidhasu’, the arrangements undertaken for you. Some read instead that it is Shiva himself who is not attached to elaborate undertakings, and that also fits the voice of the previous verse. Under either reading the result is the same, that a service needing no materials is enough.

It is worth noticing that one deity is called by three names, Shambhu, Ishvara and Sadashiva, one name for each instrument and all three the same Lord. What the mind serves is the ‘akriti’, the form, so the worship the hands cannot reach the mind performs within. Tradition calls this manasapuja, worship in the mind. ‘Shambhoh’ at the end of the first quarter and ‘raham’ at the start of the second are joined by sandhi and are to be split as shambhoh aham.

In eighty-six the material was ready and the procedure unknown. In eighty-nine came the question of what pleases him. Here comes the answer, that speech, mind and head are what will be given. The last ten verses of the work turn from asking towards offering. The metre is the same as in eighty-seven and eighty-nine, eleven syllables in the odd quarters and twelve in the even, one of the shorter metres in which the halves correspond.

We have seen a letter home made ready in three hands. One writes the address, another writes the news inside, and a third adds a line at the end. The handwriting differs and the letter is one.

Our work too is shared out in this way. Not everything has to be done by one person, and nobody has to give more than they can. The share of one who wrote a single line is not the smaller for it.
