ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O you who bear the moon on your crest, the primal ignorance that sat in my heart has gone out of it. By your grace the pleasing knowledge has entered that same heart. Daily I serve your lotus foot, the giver of prosperity, and I hold it in my thought as the vessel that holds liberation.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 91ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 91
The first two quarters are built almost out of the same syllables. The word ‘hridgata’ comes twice, first with ignorance and then with knowledge, so that what left the heart and what entered it are named alike. Avidya, vidya, hridya, hridgata, nirgata follow one upon another, and the near-identical sounds let the ear hear two movements in one place.
‘Adya avidya’ is a technical phrase of Vedanta. Adya means the first of all, that whose starting day cannot be pointed to. Advaita holds that ignorance has no beginning but does have an end. What deserves notice is this much: the verse does not say that his own effort removed it. It says ‘tvatprasadat’, by your grace. To the Vedantic statement that knowledge removes ignorance, a Shaiva devotional note is added here, for the giver of that knowledge is Shiva himself.
‘Bhave’ is taken in two ways. On one reading it is a first person verb like ‘seve’ beside it, meaning I bear in mind or I hold in thought. On the other it is the locative of bhava, feeling or thought, and then the sentence runs, in my thought I serve it daily. Either way what is said does not change. ‘Mukterbhajanam’ means the vessel that holds liberation. Bhajana is a bowl, a dish, a thing in which something is kept, and here that vessel is Shiva’s foot.
Two requests stand side by side in one quarter. ‘Shrikaram’ means the giver of prosperity, ‘mukterbhajanam’ the holder of release. The pairing of ease in this life with final freedom, both from the one foot, has come earlier in this work as well. As for ‘rajamaule’, raja here is the moon and mauli the crown of the head, so the natural sense is, O you who wear the moon on your crest. It is possible to take it as the crest jewel of kings, but the crescent in Shiva’s matted hair is the familiar image of this work, and the first sense fits better.
As to the metre: there are eleven syllables in each of the four quarters, the arrangement of long and short is the same throughout, and only the sixth and the ninth syllables are light. That is the mark of the metre called shalini, which also carried verse seventy four.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
When a long illness is over, we open the windows of that room. The bedding goes out into the sun and the smell of medicine slowly thins. Nothing new has been brought in, and yet the air of the room is different.
In the verse too, two movements happen in the same place, one going out and one coming in. In our own minds a space that empties does not stay empty. Along with counting what has gone, it helps to notice what has come in its place.
ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಬೇರೆ ಪಾಠಾಂತರವೋ ಕಂಡಿತೇ? ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ.
