ಶ್ಲೋಕ 93ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 93
This is one of the shorter verses of the work, and the whole of it is a single sentence with a single verb, ‘ramatam’. Everything else is a name of Shiva, and every one of them stands in the locative. The reason is grammatical: the root ram puts the thing delighted in into the locative case. So these are not separate statements but five names of the one place in which the heart is to take its delight.
The form ‘mamaka’ is worth noticing. Though mama and madiya are the ordinary words for my, the verse uses this emphatic form, with the ring of, this heart that is mine. The request, moreover, is not made for himself but for the heart. He does not say, make me delight in you, but, let my heart take its delight. This way of treating the heart as a creature somewhat apart from oneself opens out further in the verses that follow, where the mind is likened to an elephant.
The compound ‘komalaghanakandhara’ admits two senses. Ghana is a cloud, so the neck is dark as a cloud, the throat of the blue-necked one that held the halahala poison, of which verses thirty one and thirty two spoke. Ghana also means thick or firm, and then it is a full, well-set neck. The first sense suits the place better, because it sets up a contrast with komala: a tender throat is what held the poison.
Two verses earlier came the address ‘rajamaule’, and here the same picture is spelt out as ‘somakaladharamalau’. A digit of the moon is not the full moon but the sliver that is left, and that this waned remnant should find a place in Shiva’s hair is one of the consoling images to which this work returns. Beside the dark throat, moreover, stands ‘mahamahas’, great light. Darkness and radiance are set in one line.
As to the metre: this is not a metre counted by syllables but one of the classes counted by morae. The quarters have eight, thirteen, eight and thirteen syllables, and by morae they come to twelve, sixteen, twelve and eighteen. The measure called giti, of the arya class, wants twelve, eighteen, twelve, eighteen. The next two verses answer to that measure exactly, while here the second quarter falls a mora or two short. We therefore say only that this belongs to the arya class of measures and do not name it firmly. Nor can the possibility be ruled out that a syllable has dropped out of our printed text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
In some houses a small lamp is left burning through the night, by the stairs or near a window. Nobody sits watching it. Whoever wakes at two in the morning finds the room already lit, and that is the whole of its work.
The ‘nirantaram’ of the verse is a continuity of that kind. It is not holding attention tight all the while, but keeping something from going out. The request is a small one too. No great experience is asked for, only that the heart should keep its delight in one place.
