This weighty elephant that is the mind, in rut, moves about on every side with a bold gait. O Supreme one, take hold of it by policy with the rope of devotion, and lead it firmly to the state of Sthanu, the motionless one.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 97ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 97

The elephant of the previous verse goes on here. There the implements were the goad, the chain, the post and the contrivances; here they are a rope and a policy. The words ‘esha’ and ‘amum’ deserve notice, for both point at what is present, so the picture is of the poet pointing a finger at the elephant of his own mind and handing it over, saying, this one.

The words repay unpacking. Kari means the one that has a hand, using its trunk as a hand, and so an elephant. Gariyan is the comparative of guru, the heavier and the harder to move. Pragalbha means one without hesitation, one who speaks up boldly, so pragalbhavritti is conduct that reckons with nobody.

The key of the verse is the word ‘sthanupada’, and it is a play on two senses. Sthanu is a post fixed in the ground, a stump, and it is also a name of Shiva, who stands unmoving. Pada means a foot, a place, a state. So in one sense, lead the elephant up to its post, and in the other, lead the mind to Shiva’s stillness. Both senses run together in the one line.

The root nay comes twice, as ‘nayena’ in the sense of policy and as ‘naya’, the imperative to lead. Nowhere does the request say break this elephant or kill it. In strength the animal is no match for Shiva, yet what the verse asks for is skill. The work has said in several places that the way is not to erase the mind but to bring it to the right place and tie it there.

As to the metre: this is a half-even metre, the odd quarters of eleven syllables and sixteen morae, the even quarters of twelve syllables and eighteen morae. The two odd quarters have the same pattern of long and short, and so do the two even ones. The count fits the metre called aupacchandasika, of the vaitaliya family.

ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

When a loaded cart starts down a slope, the difficulty is not in the pulling. The load pushes from behind and the bullock has to set its legs and hold. The driver at that point does not swing the whip, but tightens the rope a little and measures the speed.

Our own strength carries us downhill in the same way. Anger, excitement, stubbornness, these are not weakness but strength that has slipped its hold. What we need at such times is not more force but a small piece of skill, and a direction.
