ಶ್ಲೋಕ 98ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 98
The whole verse is one play on double sense. Every epithet in it fits a girl standing ready for her marriage, and fits a poem just as well. The verse does not give away which it means until the last words, and only when it says ‘kavitakanyaka’ do we learn that the girl is the poet’s own poem. It is worth taking the epithets one by one.
Sarvalankarayukta: wearing all her jewels, and a poem carrying all the figures of speech. Saralapadayuta: one whose feet are straight, whose walk is easy, and a poem of simple words, since pada is both a foot and a word. Sadhuvritta: of good conduct, and a poem in correct metre. Suvarna: of fair complexion, and a poem of good syllables. Sadbhih samstuyamana: praised by good people, and a poem approved by those who know.
The rest go the same way. Sarasagunayuta: full of sweet qualities, and since guna also means a string, a poem that sounds like a sweet string. Lakshita: marked by auspicious signs, and a poem made clear by definition. Lakshanadhya: rich in the good marks of the body, and a poem that answers to the rules of grammar. Udyadbhushavishesha: wearing special ornaments freshly put on, and a poem whose adornments rise as it goes. Upagatavinaya: come to modesty, and a poem corrected into discipline. Dyotamanartharekha: with shining lines on her body, and a poem whose lines shine with sense. And last, kalyani: the auspicious girl, and the poem that brings good.
The word ‘grihana’ in the last line belongs to the giving away of a daughter. The poet stands in the place of the father who gives, and the one who is to accept is addressed as Gauri’s beloved, which carries its own quiet wit, since the girl is being handed to one who already loves Gauri. Many read the verse as the marrying of the poem to Shiva, while others keep grihana to the plainer sense of accept this offering. Either way what remains is the same gesture: handing over what one has made, and letting go of it.
As to the metre: there are twenty one syllables in each quarter, with a pause after every seven. That arrangement is the one called sragdhara, and it is the longest metre used in this work. A line of that length was just what this string of epithets needed.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
A daughter’s wedding album is a strange object. What is in it is the pictures of one day, but what its keepers see in it is the twenty years before that day. Everything that was prepared passes, on that one day, into someone else’s hands.
The work we make and send out is like that too. It is ours while we are preparing it, and once handed over it is no longer in our hands. What is left to do at that point is one thing only: to let go, with the quiet of having made it as well as we could.
