O husband of Bhavani, Yama has shrunk back for fear of a blow on his chest, the gods wave their lamps with the flame buds that are the bright jewels of their crowns, and liberation, seeing this, comes as a bride and gives her embrace where no one sees it. For the mind whose work is the worship of your lotus feet, what is there here that is hard to get?

Context and commentary on verse 65

This verse is to be read along with the one before it. Both open with the same compound, vakshastadana. The previous verse asked whether that kick was work fit for Shiva’s foot, and this one shows what those same feet have won for the devotee. It names three results in rising order and puts its question in the last quarter. Death draws back, the gods wave lights, and liberation comes of her own accord.

The word used of Yama is worth notice. He is not killed and not defeated, he is vichalita, which is to say he has moved a little aside. The memory of the kick that once fell keeps him standing there. Tradition tells how Shiva held Death back while protecting Markandeya, and the verse rests on that memory. It matters to read this correctly. What the verse says is that the fear of death loses its grip, not that the body does not die. That is the position everywhere in Shankara’s writing: death does not go away, the dread of it does.

In the second result there is a fine piece of picturing. Nirajana is the waving of lit lamps before a deity. When the gods bow their heads the jewels of their crowns shine in front, and that shining looks like the lamps of an arati. The word dipakalika means the bud of a flame, since a flame is shaped like a bud. In the previous verse these same crowns were rubbing against Shiva’s feet, and here they have become an arati before the devotee. The link between the two verses is not an accident.

The third result is the embrace of liberation. The key word is nibhrita, which means concealed, noiseless, falling under nobody’s eye. Liberation does not come with a drum beating in front of it. It comes while the devotee is absorbed in the work of the feet, and joins him without his noticing. In the Advaita view that is the right way to put it, since liberation is not a distant place but the recognition of what is already so, and needs no procession. The image of the bride is not new in this work. Verse forty six called devotion itself a company of brides, and here liberation is the bride. If we notice the word drishtva, the sense is that she chose this devotee after seeing Yama draw back and the gods wave their lights.

The construction of the last quarter should be unpacked. The sense is: for that mind whose work is the worship of your lotus feet, what is there here that is hard to get. It is a question that asks for no answer, and the word iha keeps the question within this world. In the second line the stretch muktivadhustanoti is to be split as muktivadhuh and tanoti, for being joined in sandhi it can be broken another way. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today

Standing at an autorickshaw stand, the address we have to reach looks far off, and the reckoning of which road, how long and how much fare goes on in the head. Once we are seated that reckoning stops, for the driver knows the lanes.

A good many of our worries are the worries of before getting in. Once it is settled in whose hands we have placed the matter, the reckoning grows less of itself.
