On one side is the bow of the heart, bent because the bowstring of devotion has been strung upon it. On the other are the unfailing arrows of the remembrance of Shiva, set to that string. With them the foremost of the wise conquers outright the enemies that are his sins, and, victorious, joyfully wins a royal fortune that stands firm.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 71ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 71

The verse runs on one picture, that of a king with a bow. Taking its parts apart: the bow is bhava, the leaning of the heart, the string strung upon it is devotion, the arrows are the remembrance of Shiva, the enemies are his own sins, and what comes into his hand at the end is a royal fortune that does not slip. Nothing that is conquered here lies outside him.

Two senses of the word ‘guna’ make the beauty of this verse. In Sanskrit guna means a good quality and also the string of a bow, and arudha means what has been mounted. So ‘arudhabhaktiguna’ reads at once as the risen quality of devotion and as the string of devotion strung on the bow. A bow without a string is only a bent stick. Its power comes not from the wood but from the tightened string.

‘Kunchita’ means bent. A bow bends when the string goes on, and it is in bending that it gains its strength. ‘Amogha’, besides, is the old poets’ word for an arrow that does not come back empty-handed. Why should the remembrance of Shiva not miss? Because its mark lies within. ‘Banagana’ is plural, not one arrow but volley after volley, so what the verse asks for is repetition rather than one grand act.

The word ‘susthira’, firmly standing, placed upon ‘rajalakshmi’ deserves notice. In poetry royal fortune is named the unsteady one, she who does not stay in one place. A king who defeats his enemies takes their wealth, but that wealth then sets out towards whoever conquers next. Here the enemies defeated are his own faults, so what is gained cannot be seized by another. Many read this royal fortune as liberation, and others as the quiet sovereignty a person gains over himself.

Verses 71 to 75 take up a pattern. Each one picks a worldly occupation and turns it towards devotion: an archer here, then a seeker of buried treasure, a farmer, one who scents a box, and a horseman. A word about the metre. The shardulavikridita of many of the earlier verses has changed here. Each quarter has fourteen syllables, and the arrangement of long and short is that of vasantatilaka.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

On a building site a wall does not stand up in a day. It rises course by course, and over each course the mason stretches his string and looks along it. If one course runs a little out of true, every course above it follows that same lean.

Our own good habits stand in the same way. One small check a day does more work than one large resolve. Winning does not come as the news of a single day. It is a condition that lasts, like a wall that stands straight.
