Context and commentary on verse 18.2

Shankara gives yagas done from desire, such as the ashvamedha, as examples of ‘kamya karma’: not performing them is renunciation. Performing the daily and occasional duties while giving up their fruit so that it does not attach to oneself is relinquishment. His main conclusion: the basic sense of both words is the same, ‘giving up’, they are not things of different kinds like a pot and a cloth.

Shankara also raises an objection: it is said that daily duties have no fruit, so how can one give up a fruit that does not exist, like giving up the son of a barren woman? His answer: the Lord holds that even daily duties have fruit, as 18.12 says. Ramanuja introduces this verse at the end of his comment on 18.1: here the Lord sets out the differing views of disputants in order to establish that the nature of the two words is one. Separate comments by Ramanuja, Madhva and Sridhara on this verse are not in our source text.

For life today

Giving up work is one thing, and loosening one’s grip on the fruit of work is another. The second is possible in the very midst of life.

Those caring for a loved one through a long illness do not give up their care, but when they accept that the outcome is not in their hands, their minds grow lighter.
