Context and commentary on verse 18.46
‘Svakarmana tam abhyarchya’, worshipping him through one’s own work, is among the most democratic sentences of the Gita: worship needs no other materials, the work itself is the flower. According to Shankara the arising and activity of beings come from the Lord as inner controller, and each person, of whatever varna, worshipping him through his own work, gains the perfection of fitness for steadfastness in knowledge. Sridhara Swami calls him the supreme Lord who pervades the universe as its cause.
Ramanuja says the Lord is speaking here of himself, the inner self even of Indra and the other gods: worshipping him through one’s own work and reaching him by his grace is the perfection. He links the earlier word ‘I am the origin of the whole world’ (7.6). Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

A nurse’s care, a mechanic’s careful repair, a teacher’s patience and a farmer’s sweat are all ‘abhyarchana’, worship, when done wholeheartedly.
When work is seen as worship, its quality rises of itself. No one would care for half-hearted worship.
