Context and commentary on verse 18.70
Reading too is worship. Shankara states the place of ‘jnanayajna’: among the ritual sacrifice, japa, whispered recitation and the mental kind, the sacrifice of knowledge is the highest because it is mental. He gives two readings: this is praise of studying the Gita, or a statement of its fruit.
According to Ramanuja the Lord is worshipped by the sacrifice of knowledge told in this dialogue, by its mere study. Sridhara Swami takes ‘adhyeshyate’ as reciting it in the manner of japa, and that is the sacrifice of knowledge, higher than all sacrifices. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Reading one verse a day, slowly, with its meaning, is a simple way to make a great text part of life. That is the purpose of these pages too.
Reading and discussing together with the family brings ‘dialogue’ into the home. The Gita is itself a dialogue, and asking questions is part of it.
