Context and commentary on verse 18.14

A list of five causes, and the acharyas give ‘the doer’ and ‘the divine’ different senses. For Shankara the ‘seat’ is the body, the basis in which desire, aversion, pleasure, pain and knowledge become manifest, the ‘doer’ is the experiencer as conditioned by adjuncts, the ‘instruments’ are the twelve such as the ear, the ‘functions’ are the workings of the vital airs such as prana and apana, and the ‘divine’ is the deities such as Aditya who favour the eye and the other senses. For Sridhara Swami the ‘doer’ is the ego, the knot of consciousness and matter, and the ‘divine’ is Aditya and the others, or the inner controller who impels all.

For Ramanuja the ‘doer’ is the individual self, who is both knower and agent, and the ‘divine’ is the Supreme Self as inner controller, the chief cause in the accomplishment of action. For this he quotes 15.15 and 18.61, and also the Brahma Sutra (2.3.41) that the agency of the individual depends on the Supreme. Madhva’s reading is distinctive: the ‘doer’ is Vishnu, who is the doer of everything. The ‘divine’ means adrishta, the unseen fruit of past deeds. For actions such as meditation, he says, the activity of the mind is a cause, and past activity also becomes a cause as a latent impression.

For life today

This list of five causes fits health too: the state of the body, the person’s mind, medicines and equipment, the effort made, and a factor that is not in our hands.

Accepting ‘daiva’ does not mean giving up effort, it means adding humility to effort.
