  • ದೇಹಭೃತಾ ಹಿ (देहभृता हि, dehabhṛtā hi) = ದೇಹಧಾರಿಯಿಂದ (for by an embodied being)
  • ಕರ್ಮಾಣಿ ಅಶೇಷತಃ ತ್ಯಕ್ತುಂ ನ ಶಕ್ಯಮ್ (कर्माणि अशेषतः त्यक्तुं न शक्यम्, karmāṇi aśeṣataḥ tyaktuṃ na śakyam) = ಕರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ (actions cannot be given up entirely)
  • ಯಃ ತು ಕರ್ಮಫಲತ್ಯಾಗೀ (यः तु कर्मफलत्यागी, yaḥ tu karmaphalatyāgī) = ಯಾರು ಕರ್ಮಫಲವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟವನೋ (but one who gives up the fruit of action)
  • ಸಃ ತ್ಯಾಗೀ ಇತಿ ಅಭಿಧೀಯತೇ (सः त्यागी इति अभिधीयते, saḥ tyāgī iti abhidhīyate) = ಅವನೇ ತ್ಯಾಗಿ ಎನಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ (is called a relinquisher)

For an embodied being cannot give up actions entirely. One who gives up the fruit of action is the one called a relinquisher.

Context and commentary on verse 18.11

This is Krishna’s practical conclusion. Ramanuja says it simply: one who bears a body cannot avoid the food and water needed to sustain it and the actions connected with them, so the great sacrifices and the like cannot be avoided either. One who gives up the fruit in them is the relinquisher of the Upanishad’s ‘immortality through relinquishment’.

Shankara gives ‘dehabhrit’ a special sense: one who takes the body to be oneself. One who knows the imperishable self (2.21) has already been set outside the entitlement of agency, so this statement concerns the ignorant. Sridhara Swami answers an objection: is not giving up all action better than giving up the fruit? No, for one who identifies with the body it is not possible. According to Madhva this verse says that any other sense of relinquishment is not right.

For life today

Breathing, eating and sleeping are also actions. There is no running away from action, so the question is not ‘should I act’ but ‘how should I act’.

Even a bedridden patient acts: taking medicines, thanking those who care, comforting the family. These too are meaningful.
