Context and commentary on verse 18.55
The acharyas part on the meaning of ‘vishate tadanantaram’, he enters thereafter. According to Shankara ‘yavan’, how great, is the extent that comes from adjuncts, and ‘yah’, who, is the nature that is free of all distinctions of adjuncts, like space, pure non-dual consciousness. Knowing and entering are not two different acts here, since there is no other fruit, knowledge itself is the entering, as ‘know me also as the knower of the field’ (13.2) has said. According to Sridhara Swami, after knowing, when even that knowledge subsides, he becomes of the nature of supreme bliss.
Ramanuja’s reading puts devotion at the centre: one enters the Lord through the boundless devotion that arises after knowing in truth his nature, character, qualities and glories. He links the word ‘possible only through undivided devotion’ (11.54). Passing judgement on these differences is not the task of this page. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Knowing a patient not merely as an illness but with their life, family and fears is the beginning of good care. Caring deepens understanding.
