But that knowledge which clings to a single effect as if it were the whole, without reason, not grasping the truth, and narrow, is declared tamasic.
Context and commentary on verse 18.22
The mark of tamasic knowledge is the obstinacy of ‘only this, nothing beyond’. Shankara gives examples from his time: the view of some schools that the self is only the size of the body, or the view that God is no more than an object of stone or wood, that is, holding a single effect to be the whole truth. Sridhara Swami gives the same sense and calls ‘ahaituka’ without reasoning.
Ramanuja reads it from the view of the fruit of action: clinging to a single act of very small fruit, such as the worship of ghosts and spirits, as though it gave the complete fruit, with a mistaken understanding of the self as before. ‘Alpa’ means of small fruit. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Medicine has a name for this: the error of anchoring to a first impression. Holding the first diagnosis to be right and ignoring new symptoms leads to mistakes.
Asking another doctor’s opinion in a serious illness is not distrust, it is a remedy for the narrow view of ‘only this’.
