Context and commentary on verse 18.58

In Krishna’s words hope and warning come together. Shankara calls the ‘durgas’ everything impassable that causes worldly bondage, and names the form of ego as the feeling ‘I am learned’. For Sridhara Swami too the ‘durgas’ are the impassable sorrows of worldly life.

Ramanuja makes the form of ego clearer still: the feeling ‘I alone know everything about what should and should not be done’. There is no one apart from the Lord, he says, who governs the conscious and the non-conscious. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

Ignoring a doctor’s advice with the feeling ‘I know everything’ worsens many illnesses. Discussing what one has read online with the doctor is good, treating it as final is dangerous.

A listening mind is halfway across difficulties. Calmly hearing and weighing the advice of elders, teachers and friends is a mark of humility.
