Context and commentary on verse 18.29
After knowledge, action and the doer come two more mirrors: understanding and steadfastness. Ramanuja’s definitions are clear: ‘buddhi’ is decisive knowledge born of discernment, and ‘dhriti’ is the capacity to hold on to a task once begun and carry it forward even when obstacles arise.
Shankara calls this a sutra-like announcement of what follows, and gives the reason for the name ‘Dhananjaya’: one who in his conquest of the quarters won great wealth, both human and divine. Sridhara Swami says the meaning is clear. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Deciding rightly is half the work, and carrying the decision through to the end is the other half. Both understanding and steadfastness are needed.
In long treatments such as for tuberculosis, patients commonly stop the medicine as soon as they feel better. Continuing until the period the doctor advised is complete is Ramanuja’s ‘dhriti’.
