Context and commentary on verse 18.20

For Shankara this is the vision of non-duality: in all beings from the unmanifest to the immovable, one reality, the self, unchanging in its nature or its properties, undivided in every body. Sridhara Swami calls it the one imperishable that runs through beings, from Brahma down to plants, that are distinct from one another.

Ramanuja’s reading is socially meaningful too: in bodies divided as brahmana, kshatriya, student and householder, with differences such as fair or tall, seeing the self, whose nature is knowledge alone, as of one form and free of those differences, is sattvic knowledge. For Madhva ‘ekam bhavam’ means Vishnu, the one Lord in all.

For life today

Giving the same quality of care to all in a hospital, regardless of caste, religion, money or language, is the direct practice of this verse.

It is notable that Ramanuja cites bodily differences such as colour and height: in this knowledge there is no room for discrimination based on skin colour.
