Context and commentary on verse 18.66
The verse famous as the Gita’s ‘charama shloka’, its final word, and the most discussed of all. The acharyas part on the very meaning of ‘sarvadharman parityajya’. According to Shankara ‘dharma’ here includes adharma too, since what is intended is freedom from action, on the basis of the Katha Upanishad (1.2.24) and the Mahabharata’s ‘give up both dharma and adharma’. Renouncing all actions and resolving that the Lord, who dwells in all and is free of birth, age and death, is ‘I’ is the taking of refuge. Release from the bondage of dharma and adharma comes by the revealing of the nature of the self (10.11). In the long discussion that follows, he establishes that knowledge of the self alone is the means to liberation, not action, and not a combination of knowledge and action.
Ramanuja gives two readings. One: while practising karma yoga, jnana yoga and bhakti yoga with great love according to one’s entitlement, giving up fruit, the sense of ‘mine’ and agency as taught at the start of the chapter, and contemplating the Lord alone as the doer, the one worshipped, the goal and the means, is the relinquishment the scripture intends. The other: a consolation to Arjuna, who grieved that the countless sins of beginningless time could not be removed by expiations within a limited life: give up those expiatory dharmas and take refuge in me, the refuge of all without regard to distinctions, an ocean of tender love for those who depend on me. According to Madhva ‘giving up dharma’ means giving up the fruit, for otherwise how would the command to fight fit, and 18.11 says just this. According to Sridhara Swami it means, with firm faith that ‘everything will come about through devotion to me alone’, giving up servitude to rules and taking refuge in him alone, and not grieving that sin may come from leaving actions undone. Passing judgement on these differences is not the task of this page.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
‘Ma shuchah’, do not grieve: this is the Gita’s final consolation. For those bowed down by the weight of old mistakes, Ramanuja’s second reading is a door of hope: grace is greater than our reckoning.
None of the acharyas reads this verse as permission to drop one’s duties carelessly. If relentless guilt is shrinking one’s life, it may also be a symptom of depression, and one should contact a doctor or someone one trusts without delay.
