Context and commentary on verse 18.21
According to Shankara this is the knowledge that there are different selves in each body, each with different marks. Since knowledge cannot itself be an agent, he says it should be understood as ‘the knowledge by which one knows’. Sridhara Swami calls it the knowledge that there really are many knowers of the field, seeing ‘this one is happy, that one is miserable’.
Ramanuja’s reading stands opposite to the previous verse: at the time of entitlement to action, to know the selves too as different by the difference of forms such as brahmana, as of different kinds through fairness, height and the like, and as suited to fruits, is rajasic knowledge. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Studies have shown that prejudice which sees people only through group labels can spoil the quality of care. Seeing each patient as a person is the remedy.
Recognising differences is not wrong, for each person’s needs differ. Taking the differences as the final truth and measuring human worth by them is rajasic.
