Context and commentary on verse 18.15

The five causes apply to all action, good and bad alike. Shankara adds a subtle point: even natural movements needed for life, such as blinking, are the result of past dharma and adharma, and so are included within ‘right or its opposite’. Sridhara Swami says that action begun by the five causes is gathered here into the three kinds of body, speech and mind.

Ramanuja takes ‘nyayya’ as established by scripture and ‘viparita’ as forbidden by it, and says the five causes of the previous verse are the causes of all action of body, speech and mind. Madhva’s comment comes together with the previous verse: the doer is Vishnu, and ‘daiva’ is the unseen result of past deeds.

For life today

This verse reminds us that speech too is action. A harsh word can wound as much as a deed done by hand.

The thoughts of the mind are the beginning of action too. If a hostile thought is noticed as a seed, it can be kept from growing into word and deed.
