Context and commentary on verse 18.36
The last of the mirrors of the gunas is happiness. Ramanuja states its place: this is the happiness for the sake of which the knowledge, action and doer described earlier all exist. According to Sridhara Swami the first half-verse announces the subject, and the next verse and a half describe sattvic happiness.
All stress the word ‘abhyasat’, through practice. For Shankara it means familiarity, repetition again and again. Sridhara Swami shows the difference: this happiness does not come all at once like the pleasure of the senses, it grows through practice. According to Ramanuja long practice brings, step by step, an unsurpassed delight and an end to all the sorrow of worldly life. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
The happiness of music, exercise, reading and meditation grows only through practice. For those who get past the difficulty of the first days, it becomes a deep and steady joy.
‘Delighting through practice’ is a lesson for children’s learning too: building the habit of moving forward little by little without asking for instant results.
