Context and commentary on verse 18.37
The Gita’s famous simile: poison at first, nectar in the end. According to Shankara, at the beginning of knowledge, dispassion, meditation and samadhi there is great effort, so it is painful like poison, and when they ripen it is like nectar. He gives ‘atmabuddhiprasada’ two senses: the clarity of one’s own intellect, or the clarity of the understanding whose object is the self.
Ramanuja links this to the experience of yoga: at its beginning there is much effort and no experience yet of the self as distinct, so it is like poison. When the nature of the self shines forth through the strength of practice, it is like nectar. According to Sridhara Swami it is painful at first because it depends on restraint of the mind, and it is nectar when the stains of rajas and tamas leave and the understanding becomes clear.
The first days of giving up smoking or alcohol are hard: restlessness, irritability and trouble sleeping. These usually ease within a few weeks. Heavy drinkers should get a doctor’s help before stopping suddenly.
The body aches of the first weeks of exercise and the confusion at the start of learning something new are all ‘poison at first’. Knowing this makes giving up early less likely.
