Context and commentary on verse 18.25
Work begun without asking four questions is tamasic. Shankara unfolds them: ‘anubandha’ is what will follow, ‘kshaya’ is the loss of strength or money in doing the work, ‘himsa’ is the pain caused to beings, and ‘paurusha’ is one’s own capacity: can I finish this work? Sridhara Swami takes ‘kshaya’ as the expense of money.
Ramanuja calls ‘anubandha’ the sorrow that clings after the action, and ‘moha’ ignorance of the agency of the Supreme Person. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Before a big decision, this verse’s four questions are useful: what will follow? What is the cost? Will anyone be harmed? Is this within my capacity?
Driving after drinking, riding without a helmet, and borrowing without reckoning the interest are all tamasic actions that ignore these four questions.
