ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನ ದ್ವೇಷ್ಟ್ಯಕುಶಲಂ ಕರ್ಮ ಕುಶಲೇ ನಾನುಷಜ್ಜತೇ।
ತ್ಯಾಗೀ ಸತ್ತ್ವಸಮಾವಿಷ್ಟೋ ಮೇಧಾವೀ ಛಿನ್ನಸಂಶಯಃ ॥ 10 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
न द्वेष्ट्यकुशलं कर्म कुशले नानुषज्जते।
त्यागी सत्त्वसमाविष्टो मेधावी छिन्नसंशयः ॥ 10 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸತ್ತ್ವಸಮಾವಿಷ್ಟಃ ಮೇಧಾವೀ (सत्त्वसमाविष्टः मेधावी, sattvasamāviṣṭaḥ medhāvī) = ಸತ್ತ್ವದಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ ಮೇಧಾವಿ (filled with sattva, intelligent)
- ಛಿನ್ನಸಂಶಯಃ ತ್ಯಾಗೀ (छिन्नसंशयः त्यागी, chinnasaṃśayaḥ tyāgī) = ಸಂಶಯ ಕಳೆದ ತ್ಯಾಗಿ (the relinquisher whose doubts are cut)
- ಅಕುಶಲಂ ಕರ್ಮ ನ ದ್ವೇಷ್ಟಿ (अकुशलं कर्म न द्वेष्टि, akuśalaṃ karma na dveṣṭi) = ಅಹಿತವಾದ ಕರ್ಮವನ್ನು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not hate unpleasant action)
- ಕುಶಲೇ ನ ಅನುಷಜ್ಜತೇ (कुशले न अनुषज्जते, kuśale na anuṣajjate) = ಹಿತವಾದದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (nor cling to pleasant action)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸತ್ತ್ವದಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ, ಮೇಧಾವಿಯಾದ, ಸಂಶಯ ಕಳೆದ ತ್ಯಾಗಿ ಅಹಿತವಾದ ಕರ್ಮವನ್ನು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಹಿತವಾದ ಕರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The relinquisher filled with sattva, intelligent, with doubts cut away, does not hate unpleasant action, nor cling to pleasant action.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 18.10ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 18.10
ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಅಕುಶಲ’ವನ್ನು ದೇಹಾರಂಭದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂಸಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಕಾಮ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮ, ‘ಕುಶಲ’ವನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ತಶುದ್ಧಿ, ಜ್ಞಾನೋದಯದ ಮೂಲಕ ಮೋಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ನಿತ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತ್ಯಾಗಿ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದನ್ನು ‘ಇದರಿಂದೇನು’ ಎಂದು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಎರಡನೆಯದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಅಂಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಕುಶಲ’ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ, ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಪಶು, ಅನ್ನದಂಥ ಇಷ್ಟ ಫಲದ ಕರ್ಮ.
Shankara takes ‘akushala’ as desire-driven action that causes samsara by bringing about a body, and ‘kushala’ as daily duty that leads to liberation through purity of mind and the dawn of knowledge. The relinquisher does not hate the first, thinking ‘what use is this’, nor cling lovingly to the second. For Ramanuja ‘kushala’ is action with desired fruit such as heaven, children, cattle and food.
ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಹೃದಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಾಗುವಂಥದ್ದು: ‘ಅಕುಶಲ’ ಎಂದರೆ ದುಃಖ ತರುವಂಥದ್ದು, ಚಳಿಗಾಲದ ಬೆಳಗಿನ ಸ್ನಾನದಂಥದ್ದು. ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕ ತ್ಯಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನೂ ದ್ವೇಷಿಸದೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ‘ಮೇಧಾವಿ’ ತತ್ತ್ವವನ್ನು ಇದ್ದಂತೆ ತಿಳಿದವನು, ಅದರಿಂದಲೇ ಅವನ ಸಂಶಯ ಕಳೆದಿದೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Sridhara Swami’s example touches the heart: ‘akushala’ means what brings discomfort, like a morning bath in winter. The sattvic relinquisher does it without hating it. According to Ramanuja the ‘medhavin’ is one who knows reality as it is, and for that very reason his doubts are cut. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Today’s forms of Sridhara Swami’s ‘winter morning bath’ are screening tests that are uncomfortable but save lives, dental treatment and the morning walk. Done without resentment, they become lighter.
ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿರುವುದೂ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಇಷ್ಟದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಮಾಡುವ ತಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳು ಯಾರದೋ ಹೆಗಲಿಗೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತವೆ.
Not clinging to the work we like is equally important. In a team where people do only the tasks they enjoy, the rest falls on someone else’s shoulders.
