Context and commentary on verse 18.12

Shankara unfolds the three fruits: the undesired is hell, birth as an animal and the like, the desired is the state of a god, and the mixed is human birth, where the desired and undesired blend. All of these, he says, are like a conjuror’s illusion born of ignorance, and the very word ‘phala’ hints at their fleeting nature. Sridhara Swami calls them the state of a hell-being, of a god, and of a human.

Ramanuja calls the ‘mixed’ children, cattle, food and the like mingled with the undesired, and the ‘non-relinquishers’ those who have not given up agency, mine-ness and fruit. For him the ‘renouncer’ is one who has given up these three, that is, in this chapter relinquishment and renunciation are one. According to Madhva this verse is in praise of relinquishment.

For life today

Most of life’s fruits are ‘mixed’: difficulty comes along with the good. Children, jobs and homes all bring responsibility along with joy. Accepting this lessens disappointment.

Freedom from the reckoning of results is not apathy but the freedom to do work for its own goodness.
