Context and commentary on verse 18.42

Notably, this list contains no privilege, it is all qualities and disciplines. Ramanuja’s senses: ‘shama’ is control of the outer senses, ‘dama’ control of the inner organ, ‘kshanti’ the mind remaining undisturbed even when others cause pain, ‘arjava’ outward conduct matching the mind, ‘jnana’ true knowledge of the higher and lower realities, and ‘vijnana’ special knowledge of the Supreme.

Sridhara Swami calls ‘shama’ the stilling of the mind and ‘dama’ the stilling of the outer senses, the reverse of Ramanuja’s order. Shankara calls ‘astikya’ faith in the meaning of scripture, and ‘tapas’ the austerity of body, speech and mind described earlier (17.14 to 17.16). Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

These qualities are not the property of any one group, anyone can cultivate them. We see them in a good teacher, doctor or counsellor.

Ramanuja’s ‘kshanti’, the mind staying unspoiled even when others hurt us, is a quality everyone needs on the stressful days of a hospital.
