Context and commentary on verse 18.1
The last chapter of the Gita, Arjuna’s last question. Sridhara Swami states the nature of the chapter in a verse: a summary of the meaning of the whole Gita through the distinction of nyasa and tyaga. He also gives the background of the question: the Gita has taught renunciation of action in one place (5.13) and the performance of action with relinquishment of its fruit in another (12.11). The all-knowing, supremely compassionate Lord would not teach contradictions, so Arjuna asks to understand how they agree.
According to Ramanuja the Upanishads declare both tyaga and sannyasa to be means to liberation: ‘by relinquishment alone some attained immortality’ (Mahanarayana). The question is whether the two words have different meanings or the same. Sridhara Swami tells the story behind the name ‘Keshinishudana’: when Keshi, in the form of a horse, came with open mouth to swallow him, Krishna thrust his left arm into its mouth, and the arm grew and split him apart, hence ‘mighty-armed’. According to Madhva this chapter sums up and concludes all the means taught before.

When two pieces of advice seem to contradict each other, asking clearly like Arjuna is wise. If a doctor’s advice seems confusing, ask them to separate it out: what does this mean, and what does that mean.
Sridhara Swami’s stance is also a lesson: when we see a contradiction in the words of a teacher we respect, rather than dismissing it, we look for the meaning that reconciles both.
